Hamburger, Onion and Peppers Gyros

This recipe will put your family in a happy mood and a new spin on the boring hamburger night. These gyros are packed with flavor, super easy to make and the whole family will love them! Load up your pita bread with browned, seasoned ground beef, sauteed onions and green peppers and you have a convenient and quick meal.

These are no ordinary gyros though. We have added tomatoes, red pepper, Rotel with green chilies and then topped it with sour cream and crumbled Blue Cheese.

Obviously, there are any number of meat and vegetable combinations that can be made into a gyro. Let your imagination go wild. Think of your family and their favorite foods.

Pitas and gyros are known as a Greek food. They are generally topped with a sauce made with yogurt and herbs or other flavors, this is called Tzatzuki. It is very popular when used on gyros. It could become habit forming for other foods also.

You could use American, Gouda, Mozzarella or any flavor you would like.

Simply, tzatziki is a sauce that uses yogurt as a base, then multiple other flavors or herbs are added.

            Can I use chicken instead of beef?

You could certainly use Roasted chicken in place of ground beef. You could use the same vegetables or switch those up to add a whole new layer of flavor.

            How do I store this?

The meat mixture should be placed into an airtight container and then placed in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

            The meat can also be frozen in an airtight container for up to 3 months.

What do you need to make Hamburger, Onion and Peppers Gyros

            1 ½ pounds lean ground beef

            3 tsp Olive Oil

            1 c green pepper chopped

            1 c red pepper chopped

            1 cup yellow onion, chopped

            1 can Rotel, tomatoes with green chilies

            4 pieces Pita bread, warmed until soft

            ½ cup sour cream

            ¼ cup blue cheese crumbles

How to make Hamburger, Onion and Peppers Gyros

FIRST STEP:

Warm the pitas in the microwave for just a few seconds until the pitas are soft and warm

Crumble the lean ground beef into a skillet

Add in the Olive Oil, green and red peppers and the onions

SECOND STEP:

Continue to cook until the ground beef is thoroughly cooked

The onions and peppers should be soft

Stir in the can of Rotel tomatoes with green chilies

Sprinkle with salt and pepper, season to taste

THIRD STEP:

Lay four sheets of aluminum foil on a flat surface

Place a Pita on each sheet

FOURTH STEP:

Add ¼ of the meat mixture to the center of each pita

Using the Aluminum foil, roll the gyro up

Top with crumbled blue cheese and sour cream if desired
