Can you cook hamburger meat in the crockpot?
While you can cook ordinary ground beef in the crockpot, I do not suggest doing so with these patties.
The searing process ensures they hold together and don’t fall apart in the slow cooker.
Can I use ground turkey instead of ground beef?
Personally, I wouldn’t. The added fat in the ground beef assists in the overall flavor and consistency of the patties. Also, Salisbury steak is meant to be beef, it’s just a different flavor profile!
What goes good with Salisbury steak?
So many things! My personal favorite is with a bead of mashed potatoes. You can also serve it with things like roasted veggies, rice, salad, other styles of potatoes, and more.

Can you freeze Salisbury steak?
Yes! If you’d like to make some ahead of time in bulk, you can freeze them before reheating. All you need to do is wait for them to cool and wrap them in foil before freezing.
When you’re ready, allow them to thaw overnight before reheating.
How long does Salisbury steak keep?
These patties will last 3-4 days in the fridge or 2-3 months in the freezer. It’s a great meal prep recipe…though we usually don’t have many leftovers from this one!
Homemade Salisbury steak ingredients
- ground beef
- mushroom soup
- sliced mushrooms
- brown gravy mix
- garlic powder
- steak seasoning
- white onion
- beef broth
How to make this homemade steak
Line the bottom of your crockpot with the sliced mushrooms and onion.
In a large mixing bowl, mix together the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, and garlic powder. Form the mixture into small round flat patties.
Season the patties with steak seasoning or salt and pepper and then heat them on medium heat for 3 minutes on each side. This will give them a nice sear and help hold together as they cook in the crockpot.
Add the patties to the top of the mushroom and onions in the crockpot.
Sprinkle the brown gravy mix evenly on the top of the patties.
Pour the can of mushroom soup on top of the patties followed by the beef broth; cover crockpot.
Cook on high for 6 hours; stirring twice throughout the cooking time, if possible.
Serve over mashed potatoes and enjoy!
