From the Southern United States comes a dish that is the perfect Tex Mex combination. Texas Hash is a hearty and filling dish that is simple to make, but will fill you up and warm you up.

This is made with simple ingredients that you have at home already. What is perfect about this dish is that you can use up any leftover vegetables you may have in the refrigerator. As this dish simmers, it brings all the flavors together to be perfectly savory.

Adding rice in, makes this dish more filling and satisfying. This dish is versatile, allowing you to use the ingredients on hand. You would be hard pressed to find another dinner idea that is as economical as this one is.

Better yet, this dish is packed with healthy fats, complex carbohydrates and protein. A very well balanced meal.

            Can I add more spice to this dish?

If you want more of a kick, go ahead and add in some jalapeno peppers, a dash or two of Hot sauce or Sriracha.

            What type of cheese should I use?

The recipe calls for Cheddar. You could use a Mexican blend, a pepperjack cheese or simple mozzarella.

            Can I use a different meat?

Go ahead and try Turkey or chicken. You could also use pork or sausage.

            Can I add more vegetables?

Add in bell peppers, mushrooms, or zucchini will really make a great flavor addition.

What do you need to make Texas Hash

            2 tbsp Olive Oil

            1 onion, diced

            1 bell pepper, diced

            1 pound Ground beef, lean

            1 tsp garlic, freshly minced

            2 ½ tsp Chili Powder

            ½ tsp dry mustard

            1 tsp salt

            ½ tsp ground black pepper

            ½ cup uncooked long grain rice

            2 tbsp Tomato paste

            14.5 ounce can of Diced tomatoes with juice

            1 cup water

            1 ½ tsp Worcestershire Sauce

            Cheddar Cheese or Monterey Jack cheese, shredded (optional)

How to make Texas Hash

FIRST STEP:

Heat a skillet with Olive Oil over medium high heat

Add the onions, peppers, garlic, ground beef, dry mustard, chili powder, salt and pepperSaute until the beef is browned and cooked through.

The vegetables should be soft also

Add in the rice and tomato paste and cook for three minutes

Add canned tomatoes, with the juice, water and Worcestershire Sauce

SECOND STEP:

Simmer for 20 minutes, with the cover on

Remove the lid after 20 minutes and fluff with a fork

If the dish is still watery or soupy, continue to cook for 2 to 3 more minutes without the cover on

THIRD STEP:

Sprinkle with grated cheese (optional)

Serve hot
